These are the questions that do not fit on our other guide pages: doing it yourself, problems after a paint job and what to do when a painter lets you down.
Should I paint myself or hire a painter?
Paint it yourself if the room is simple and you have the time. Hire a painter for high walls, exteriors, cabinets, heavy prep and old paint that may contain lead. The paint is the easy part. Prep and cutting clean lines are where the hours go.
How much would I save painting myself?
You save the labor, which HomeGuide puts at 70% to 85% of the cost of an interior paint job. You still pay for paint, primer, tools and your own time. Those are national published figures for 2026, not our quotes.
Is a two-story exterior too dangerous to DIY?
For most people, yes. A two-story exterior means long hours on an extension ladder, often on sloping ground or over a driveway. Falls from ladders cause serious injuries every year. If you are not used to ladder work, leave the upper story to a crew with the right equipment.
Is renting a sprayer worth it?
A sprayer is worth renting for large empty spaces, fences and bare new walls. For a lived-in room it rarely is. Masking takes longer than rolling, and overspray travels. It also takes practice to avoid runs.
My DIY paint job looks bad. Can a pro fix it?
Yes. A pro can fix a bad paint job in most cases. Drips, roller ridges and rough patches are sanded flat, the wall is primed where needed and recoated. A DIY job that is peeling has to be taken back to a sound layer first.
When is a job too big to do myself?
A job is too big when it needs ladders above one story, more than a weekend or two, lead-safe work or spray equipment you do not own. A whole exterior, a stairwell and kitchen cabinets are the usual three.
Why is new paint peeling after a few months?
Paint that peels within a few months did not bond. The usual causes are a dirty or glossy surface, latex over old oil-based paint with no primer, damp wood or moisture coming from behind. It is not normal wear, and the painter should look at it.
Why does new paint look streaky or show roller marks?
Streaky paint and roller marks come from paint that dried too fast, a roller run too dry, or one thin coat where two were needed. A second full coat, kept wet from edge to edge, usually cures it.
Why can I still see the old color?
You can still see the old color because the new paint has not built enough hiding. Reds, yellows and deep blues are the hardest to cover and to cover with. The fix is another coat, or a tinted primer under strong colors.
Why does the wall look splotchy in side light?
A splotchy wall in side light has uneven sheen. Patches that were not primed soak up the paint, and touch-ups dry at a different gloss. Priming the repairs and repainting the full wall evens it out.
Why do touch-ups not match?
Touch-ups do not match because the wall has aged and the new paint has not. Sun, cleaning and time shift the color and the sheen. Even paint from the same can may stand out. Repaint the wall from corner to corner.
Why did paint peel off with the painter's tape?
Paint comes off with the tape when the layer under it was poorly bonded, or when the tape stayed on too long. Pull tape slowly at a low angle. If paint lifts in sheets, the old coat had a bonding problem.
Should a painter come back to fix missed spots?
Yes. A painter should come back for missed spots, thin areas and drips. That is why a final walk-through matters. We walk the finished job with you before it is closed out. Mark anything you see with tape.
Painter left paint on floors and windows: what now?
Ask the painter to clean it. Drips on floors, windows, hardware and the patio are the painter's to remove, and fresh latex comes off far more easily than cured paint. Take photos, list the spots and hold the final payment until it is done.
The painter will not come back: what are my options?
If the painter will not come back, write to them with photos, the contract and a date by which you expect the work finished. Keep copies. If that fails, you can complain to the Consumer Protection team of the Michigan Department of Attorney General or file in small claims court. This is general information, not legal advice.
The final invoice is higher than the written estimate: what now?
Ask for the difference line by line. Extra work should have been agreed in writing before it was done. If it was not, you can dispute the invoice. A good contract says how changes are priced and approved.
Who pays to fix paint that failed early?
Who pays depends on the cause. If the prep or application was at fault, the painter should fix it, and a written warranty makes that clear. If a leak, rot or rising damp caused it, the repair is the owner's. If the product was defective, the paint maker's warranty may apply.
